Hip Preservation

What is Hip Preservation?

Hip preservation focuses on maintaining and restoring the natural function of the hip joint, often through minimally invasive techniques and targeted interventions. The team of sports medicine surgeons, pediatric orthopedic surgeons, orthopedic trauma surgeons, rehabilitation specialists, and physical therapists at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush (MOR) is dedicated to providing the best hip preservation care possible.

If left untreated, problems like hip dysplasia, impingement, labral tears, synovial tears, cartilage injuries, bursitis, and tendonitis can lead to arthritis, which can cause irreparable damage to the joint. So to help you avoid hip replacement surgery, we use cutting-edge techniques to treat a range of disorders:

Hip Arthroscopy

A minimally invasive surgical procedure that is used to diagnose and treat hip conditions, including hip impingement (femoroacetabular impingement syndrome, FAIS), hip labral tear, bone spurs (osteophytes) and synovitis (inflammation of the joint lining). Our surgeons provide the latest techniques including state-of-the-art labral repair, labral augmentation, and labral reconstruction as well as surgical correction of FAIS, capsular repair, and reconstruction.

Osteotomies

A surgical procedure performed to correct a structural problem in the hip. Often a hip socket correction also known as a Periacetabular Osteotomy (PAO) can be performed for conditions like hip dysplasia. Sometimes a Femoral Osteotomy is recommended instead of, or in addition to, a PAO depending on the specific structural abnormalities.

Minimally Invasive Hip Restoration

Procedures used to address certain problems inside the hip joint including cartilage lesions, labral problems, tendon problems, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, perthes disease, avascular necrosis (AVN), FAIS and capsular defects. A small, minimally invasive incision is utilized on the front of the hip whenever possible. For larger procedures, sometimes a surgical hip dislocation is recommended.

Hip Preservation with MOR

The hip preservation surgeons at MOR are among the nation's most experienced. Our team uses the latest research, innovative technology, and data-driven decision-making to help patients achieve better surgical outcomes. In fact, our hip surgeons have been able to reduce our patients' need for revision surgery or subsequent hip replacement after five years from 36% to 3% — by stabilizing the hip joint during surgery.

If hip replacement is recommended, our hip preservation team also offers minimally invasive anterior approach hip replacement. Our joint replacement program is among the nation’s best, so rest assured your hip health is in excellent hands, whatever the prognosis.
