Our Sports Performance Center (SPC) employs athletic trainers – certified and licensed healthcare professionals, who have one foot in the medical field and one in the performance realm. This unique positioning allows us to serve clients transitioning back to sport who are done with physical therapy, but don’t quite feel like they’re 100%.
If your physician ordered a “Functional Sports Assessment” or “Sports Assessment,” we need to determine which assessment you will need. You’ll find specifics for each assessment below. If you are an athlete whose surgery was related to a throwing motion (Tommy John, labral repair, little leaguer’s shoulder or elbow, etc), you’ll want to choose our Throwing Assessment if you’re throwing at a high intensity. If you are returning to running only – recreational running, 5k to marathon training, or cross country, you’ll want to do our Running Assessment. If you are returning to a sport after hip, knee, or ankle surgery, you’ll want to do a plyometric prep screen if you are just starting to jump in therapy. If you are closer to returning to sport and are comfortable running, jumping, and cutting, you’ll want to do a Lower Body Assessment.
If you are interested in working with us on strength, mobility, stability, and blood flow restriction training, or would like to try an alternative to traditional personal training, choose injury risk assessment for your first session.

Athletic trainers will gather strength symmetry metrics for both legs. We do not expect your strength to be symmetrical, but we need to get a baseline of your progress to date so we can make appropriate recommendations. After strength testing, motion sensors will be applied to your back and legs so we can assess your core, hip, knee, and ankle stability with planks, side planks, single-leg squats, and lunges. If you have been jumping before this screen, we will do single-leg jumping as well. We will complete tests for both legs. The testing takes about 30 minutes to complete. Please wear athletic clothing. We will have your results immediately and will review them with your remaining session time. We can help with ideas to address your unique needs as you transition into more sport-specific drills and higher speed tasks. We will email you and your physician a copy of your reports as well as bullet points summarizing our findings.

Athletic trainers will gather strength symmetry metrics for both legs. We do not expect your strength to be perfectly symmetrical, but we need to get a baseline of your progress to date so we can make appropriate recommendations. After strength testing, motion sensors will be applied to your back and legs so we can assess your core, hip, knee, and ankle stability with planks, side planks, single-leg squats, single-leg jumps in place, single-leg jumps in different directions, 2 leg landings from a 12-inch box, single leg landings from a 12-inch box, sprinting, decelerating, and lunging. We will complete tests for both legs. The testing takes about 45 minutes to complete. Please wear athletic clothing. We will have your results immediately and will review them with your remaining session time. The throwing assessment is meant for athletes who have already made it through their interval throwing program to 120 feet or off of the mound. This appointment should not be your first time throwing as we need to assess your mechanics at high effort. If you are about to begin your program, please sign up for an injury risk assessment (link and description below) and we can help guide your journey to getting back on the field.
During the assessment, athletic trainers or our biomechanist will gather strength, active range of motion, and passive range of motion symmetry metrics for several joints in the upper and lower body that contribute to proper throwing form. After strength and range of motion testing, we will have you warm up. You will have access to resistance bands, foam rollers, weights, and medicine balls. If you require specialized equipment for your warmup, please bring that along. We want you to be comfortable when you throw. Once warmed up, you will throw (mound or flat ground as appropriate) in our sports assessment lab. There, motion capture cameras and software will create a 3D model of your throwing form and a report with metrics relevant to injury risk and efficiency. The testing takes about 60 minutes to complete. We will have your results immediately and will review them with your remaining session time. Here is an example of the report. We can help with ideas to address your unique needs as you continue to ramp up back into your sport. We will email you and your physician a copy of your reports as well as bullet points summarizing our findings.

If you do not feel that the assessments above are appropriate for you (weekend warrior, general fitness, bone density concerns, etc) then you can get an injury risk assessment with our certified athletic trainers. At this appointment, we will discuss your goals and history, then use whatever assessment tools – motion sensors, our motion capture lab, or any other relevant equipment to match your needs with your goals. That information can help guide future athletic training sessions and independent exercise programming.

After strength and range of motion testing, we will have you run on a treadmill in our sports assessment lab. There, motion capture cameras and software will create a 3D model of your running form and a report with metrics relevant to injury risk and efficiency. The testing takes about 60 minutes to complete. We will have your results immediately and will review them with your remaining session time. Here is an example of the report.
