Foot and Ankle Orthopedic Fellowship

About the program

The orthopedic foot and ankle surgery fellowship at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush is a rigorous surgical training program designed to develop foot and ankle specialists at the top of their field. The fellow will experience the full breadth of orthopedic foot and ankle pathology and treatment, ranging from lesser toe deformities to neuropathic ankle pathology to hot trauma. The fellowship curriculum is comprehensive — there are no deficits. Fellows will build particularly strong experience in complex hindfoot reconstruction, including total ankle arthroplasty; minimally invasive techniques, including minimally invasive forefoot deformity correction; and ankle and hindfoot arthroscopy; among other areas.

Faculty

Simon Lee, MD | Fellowship Director, Associate Professor, Rush University Medical Center

Dr. Lee completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Illinois Chicago and his foot and ankle surgery fellowship at OrthoCarolina. He has been an associate editor of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) journal, Foot & Ankle International (FAI) since 2004. He has served on numerous AOFAS committees and remains active in resident and fellow education on a national level. He continues to serve as the foot and ankle consultant to The Joffrey Ballet, DePaul University, the Chicago Bulls, the Chicago Fire, the Chicago White Sox, and numerous local teams.

Johnny L. Lin, MD | Assistant Professor, Rush University Medical Center

Dr. Lin completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Rush University Medical Center and his foot and ankle surgery fellowship at Campbell Clinic. He exclusively treats disorders of the foot and ankle at Rush University Medical Center. He is heavily involved in community education, training medical students and residents at Rush University, while also serving as a journal editor of Foot & Ankle International, and conducting research in his area of expertise.

Daniel D. Bohl, MD | Assistant Professor, Rush University Medical Center

Dr. Bohl completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Rush University Medical Center and his foot and ankle surgery fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center. He serves on the editorial board for Foot & Ankle International as a specialty content editor and on the AOFAS research committee that awards grant funding. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles in orthopedic surgery and remains active in leading research efforts in foot and ankle at Rush.

Edward Hur, MD

Dr. Edward Hur is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in the treatment of conditions related to the foot and ankle. He utilizes a patient-centered approach to provide comprehensive orthopedic foot and ankle care using both nonsurgical and surgical treatments. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery, total ankle arthroplasty, deformity correction, sports-related injuries, and fracture care.

Program structure & schedule

The fellowship program runs in conjunction with the orthopedic residency program, with common staff, faculty, and resources. In addition to clinical and surgical training, there are two dedicated didactic sessions with faculty per week. One of these is fellowled and includes a review of complex cases. The other is attending-led and more curriculum-driven. There is also a monthly journal club. The fellowship follows a mentorship model in which the fellow spends one month at a time with each member of the faculty. The fellow accompanies the attending in the clinic and operating room at all times. Most weeks include 2-3 days in the clinic and 2-3 days in the operating room. Clinical and surgical volumes are both very high.

Research

Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush has a rich history of research and an abundance of current opportunities for foot and ankle research in basic science, biomechanics, retrospective and prospective clinical capacities, and more. Fellows will participate in research occurring throughout the year; there is no dedicated research block. Fellows will be expected to submit a minimum of one primary research article and one review article before graduation.

Coverage responsibilities

Fellows will represent the practice as the foot and ankle consultants for all of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush’s professional, semi-professional, collegiate, and local high school athletes — including the Chicago Bulls and White Sox. Coverage also includes foot and ankle service for the world-renowned Joffrey Ballet, with coverage of several Chicago performances and participation in the training room alongside one of the faculty. There is no call for fellows, and weekend responsibilities are limited to rounding on foot and ankle patients once per month.
